The Struggles: What Nobody Tells You About Starting a Rental Business
In our first post, we told you why Texas Frozen Tropics started — a layoff during COVID, a hunch that Houston would want to celebrate again, and a decision to bet on ourselves instead of waiting for the next job offer. That part of the story sounds clean in hindsight. The early days of actually building the business? Not so much. If you’ve ever thought about starting a small business, here’s the part that doesn’t make it into the highlight reel: the hardest part isn’t the idea. It’s everything that comes after it.
Just Getting Started Is Its Own Challenge
Nobody hands you a manual when you start a rental business. We had to figure out, largely through trial and error, how to actually run one — how to price a frozen drink machine rental, how to schedule deliveries and pickups, how to keep a commercial-grade machine running smoothly for a full 24 hours at someone’s wedding, and how to do all of it while still looking professional to a customer who’s trusting us with their big day. A lot of that first stretch was mistakes. Small ones, mostly — a scheduling hiccup here, a mix order that needed adjusting there — but enough of them that some weeks felt like we were learning the business one stumble at a time. That’s just what starting something new looks like, even when you believe in it. We didn’t do it completely on our own, though — we had family members who were already in the rental business, and leaning on their experience helped us skip some of the rookie mistakes we could have made.

The Real Struggle: Finding Our First Customers
Having a good idea and a reliable machine doesn’t mean anyone knows you exist. Finding our first customers was, honestly, the hardest part of all. We were a brand-new, family-owned business in a sea of event vendors, trying to convince Houston-area hosts to take a chance on a frozen drink and margarita machine rental company nobody had heard of yet. There was no shortcut for this. It took showing up consistently, delivering a genuinely great experience for every single early customer, asking happy customers to spread the word, and being patient while word slowly started to travel through the greater Houston area — Spring, The Woodlands, Tomball, Conroe, Cypress, Klein, Katy, Humble, and Magnolia.
The Weekend Everything Changed
Every small business has a moment where the struggle starts to feel worth it. For us, that moment was the first weekend we sold out of machines completely. Every single frozen drink and margarita machine we owned was booked, delivered, and set up at events across Houston at the same time. After all the trial and error, all the slow weeks of trying to find customers, that sold-out weekend was proof that the idea worked — that people wanted what we were offering, and that Texas Frozen Tropics wasn’t just a layoff-era experiment anymore. It was a real business. That turning point didn’t mean the struggles disappeared. But it changed how we saw them — less like obstacles proving we’d made a mistake, and more like the normal cost of building something worth having.
What’s Made It Worth It
The struggles are only half the story. In the next post in this series, we’re getting into the part that actually keeps us going — the rewards of running Texas Frozen Tropics, from the messages we get after a smooth event to building this with the family and friends who’ve helped us grow: The Rewards: Why We Keep Doing This.
